Just found out today

I just found out today that I will be getting to go to China for a month this summer with a group from Valparaiso University to study Chinese language and culture. Valparaiso University was awarded a Fulbright-Hays group grant that allows them to take educators over to China for a month to study how to implement Chinese language into their K-12 curriculum. The Hamilton Southeastern Schools has a pilot program now in Chinese language, and it is my hope that I can help that pilot spread to other schools as well. Stay tuned to this blog for more updates as I get closer to leaving on June 21st.

Mr. Heiden,
It is so cool you get to go to all these places every year. I can't wait to see how China is. It sounds so beautiful. I have a question... Did you go to Japan twice? Abbie R. said you did, but I didn't think so. Have fun in China.
(P.S. Don't forget how to speak english. He he!)

Alexandra,

We'll have to see about you coming back for some lessons on China. Perhaps that will work out. Maybe Miss Young and I can work together to come up with something for both classes.

Halee Rae,

I am excited about going to China and hopefully seeing many amazing things. I did only go to Japan once, and that was during the summer of 2005.

I do like to try to go someplace every year. I don't know where I will go next summer, but hopefully it will be someplace that I haven't been before....

Valparaiso University

that's a weird name

Daniel,

Well, one month is quite a while to be away from home. I think it should be just about the right amount of time.

Valparaiso University is a college in northwestern Indiana in Valparaiso, near Chicago.

Josh,

Well, you will get to travel quite a bit I think in the future. Perhaps you could study abroad during college. I think you'd like that. I didn't leave the continential US until junior high (and that was to Hawaii). My first trip out of the country was to Mexico in later high school (I did go across the border to Canada once when I was younger, but that hardly counts!).

I am not sure if Ruth is going to China this summer. Another one of my students, Michael is going. In fact, I think he is in Japan now....

And, Trey from my class this year went during fall break of last year. It seems lots of people are making the trip!

Mr. Heiden I hope you have a great time in China. The picture of the room looks way, way different.

P.S. Are you going to the Great Wall?

Mark Heiden said...

Cowman (Evan?):

Yes, I am going to get to see a part of the Great Wall. I think it will be while I am in Beijing for a weekend visit. I am really looking forward to seeing it since it is one of the man-made wonders of the world.
