I am excited to say that I do leave for China in 110 days. Now, I have written that number in a different base than our normal base 10 system. Can anyone figure it out? I could also say that I am leaving for China in 11 days as well in yet another base.
If you would like to cheat a bit, after working hard to figure out the answer on your own using place value models, then visit this page to use the online base calculator.
I am actually in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in New York City right now visiting friends. It is strange weather here.....very cool and cloudy. I understand that it is hot and sunny in Indiana right now. If you would like to find out more about Greenpoint, Brooklyn, try reading this article.
Here is an image I found of Greenpoint, looking down Manhattan Avenue. You can see some buildings in Manhattan in the background. Also, below that image is a map that shows Greenpoint in the top left corner of Brooklyn. You can see how close it is to Manhattan (what most people think of as New York City). Remember, you can click the image for a larger view.

Greenpoint looks like a great place to visit. I hope you have a good time before you leave for China. I can't wait to hear more as the trip goes along.
Base 2 and Base 5
Miss Young, Yes it is a fun place--much different than Indiana with the Polish language being everywhere and walking down the streets to hear many different languages being spoken....very rich culture and diverse there in New York City.
Math Wizard: you are correct....so how many days in base 10?
6
Mr. Heiden,
Greenpoint looks really exciting. Have fun in China too though. Also, guess what I've forgotten? Yes, how to convert bases. It's horrible and sad and heart breaking...(just kidding!) I'm kind of glad I've forgotten because ever since I got out of your class that id exactly what me and Abbie R. have been trying to do.(he he!)
Have you heard of Cedar Point? They have a new roller coaster there called tthe Maverick. It has twists, turns, and goes over 110 miles per hour! Cool, huh? Oh, and have fun in China!
Halee Rae and Abbie R.,
That is too bad about forgetting, but I often have to brush up a bit before teaching it again in August. So, don't feel too bad.
Matthew,
I have heard of and been to Cedar Point, though it was a long time ago since I was there. I think it is in Sandusky, Ohio, up near Lake Erie...
That is a park that is world-known for its roller coasters. You'll have a blast!
6 is correct, though as of today, Tuesday, it is actually 10 days until I leave!
Most of you guys get to go somewhere and I don't.
Sai,
Well, perhaps you will get to do something fun this summer. If nothing else, do try to get to the library often to find good books to read.
Mr. Heiden,
Have a wonderful trip! I am excited to hear all about China. I have never traveled to eastern Asia, only western Europe, so you'll have to educate me about the culture. I am in Italy right now, in a little town called Novafeltria. If you'd like to learn about my town, go here:

The link isn't much, but it's what I could find. Novafeltria is a very quaint little town in the mountains and it's lovely. They host an operatic singing festival every summer.
My opera rehearsals have started and our show goes up July 7th. Wish me luck---memorizing all these Italian lyrics is hard!
Ciao!
Your cousin, Danielle
Danielle,
Good luck memorizing all that Italian opera! I may have some trouble with Chinese also! I love Italy and hope to get back there sometime. I was there in the winter time, so I would love to go back during the summer.
